AUCKLAND

auckland - New Zealand

Auckland is a hive of activity as compared to the remainder of New Zealand. A business hub, an international airport which also connects to the wondrous sites of both islands. An abundance of things to see and do, whether its cultural, sports orientated, sight-seeing or just plain fun.

If staying at the Hilton, simply turn left out of the hotel to the main road and you have lots of options. Right to the Viaduct and an array of World class yachts...it’s home to the Transatlantic race and an array of waterside restaurants and bars. Stroll and wander is a great local pastime. Whilst left it’s the City centre, Ferry terminal, the Tourist Office, Britomart and the oasis of a big leafy park

Taster Tours

My favourite way to start in any new City is a trip on the hop on / hop off bus., conveniently placed at the harbour side. You have a choice of two tours which include amongst the stops, the Museum, Zoo, Aquarium and Parnell village. Auckland Museum in Parnell, has a renowned worthwhile collection of Pacific and Maori Treasures. The Auckland War Memorial Museum in the Domain, is known for its informative exhibitions on NZ History, plus its exhibitions on NZ National and Military History. Set upon a hill with rolling grassland and a glorious view of the city below. Auckland Centre is easily accessed on foot, taking in the harbour side, the architecture of the old buildings and the overhanging canopies of the pedestrian walkways and shop fronts. A large leafy park rewards those who meander up the hill towards the University, a great place to rest those weary feet. From the main avenue , small streets branch off to reveal boutiques, galleries of local artists, with bespoke cafes and bars selling great coffee and excellent food.

Across the road at the far end of the harbour is Britomart, with some of Aucklands   oldest buildings, full of designer shops and eateries and at the weekend a Farmers Market. It is also the hub for well run local transport options and the bus to the airport. The harbour is home to the ferry terminal, with a variety of tours and the option of taking local ferries to so many parts. Nothing like taking in the views and watching the boating frenzy with the wind in your hair. Here are just two of the tours I would consider consider: Devonport, twelve minutes across the harbour is an historic and picturesque village, a perfect place to stroll along the harbour side. The narrow streets are full of stylish boutique shops which include designers and local artists for jewellery, paintings, sculpture and pottery. Caroline Sills has a wonderful designer shop of easy to wear clothes and what’s more, available the season before the UK.

Waiheke Island is beautiful, full of pristine beaches, coastline walks and wonderful wineries and olive groves. Public transport, taxis, bikes and car hire are available from the wharf to help you get around.  A hot spot for a range of Artists and Artisans who proudly display their work in the various galleries which line the main thoroughfare. Markets and festivals are also something to look out for over the summer season. The wineries have wonderful views, great sunsets, vary in size, grape type and include organic varieties. Food options to compliment the wines vary with each vineyard , choose from canapés to full restaurant....try Mudbrick or Cable Bay for the full experience. Then it’s back to the mainland for the next adventure.

Time to Linger

Britomart is a foodie haven, with great staff and service in each establishment . The eateries to look out for are: Ortolana with all day service, the menu incorporates light and fresh garden produce to compliment the other ingredients. Eating under the open glass canopy with it’s plentiful greenery completes the relaxed experience. Be tempted to order  your dessert at the neighbourhood Milse. A perfect way to complete your meal, Amano, with an Italian inspired and far ranging menu, which includes hand made pastries at breakfast with oysters and gelato at night. Busy with visitors and locals  throughout the day and very atmospheric

Milse is tiny, unique, tucked away in a small lane and specialises in the most delicious desserts and patisserie. Once seated, select from a short menu with tempting choices of finely balanced ingredients. Then sit and watch your dessert or gelato being carefully put together in the small kitchen laid out before you....the added pleasure is in seeing such artistry at work. The flavours and textures really bring those taste buds alive. Furthur temptations and goodies await, as you squeeze through the shop and exit. The Viaduct has the well established Soul Bar and Bistro which overlooks a collection of interesting boats, a hive of activity and great for people watching.....wonderful sunset views are another glorious benefit. The restaurant has a buzzy atmosphere with really good food and menu choices.....Not one to miss when staying in Auckland.
